- 6" - COMMEMORATIVE SPACE PATCH - MINT
"I am particularly proud of how this patch came out. Portraits are especially difficult to embroider. I am proud to support the effort to increase awareness of National Astronaut Day."
WHEN THESE ARE GONE, THIS PATCH WILL BE SOLD OUT...IT WILL NOT BE RE-MADE...AS PER TIM
Four years ago the uniphi space agency founded a celebration of American Space heroes called National Astronaut Day. My friends Annie Balliro and Michelle Lucas head up USA
With this year being the Apollo 11 Anniversary we wanted to honor that history. I am very proud to announce the National Astronaut Day Apollo 50th Commemorative Patch.
I digitally painted a profile portrait of President Kennedy looking towards the future. The full Moon shining above the U.S. Flag.
In the center is the Apollo/Saturn V what JFK described in 1962:
“But if I were to say, my fellow citizens, that we shall send to the moon, 240,000 miles away from the control station in Houston, a giant rocket more than 300 feet tall, the length of this football field, made of new metal alloys, some of which have not yet been invented, capable of standing heat and stresses several times more than have ever been experienced, fitted together with a precision better than the finest watch, carrying all the equipment needed for propulsion, guidance, control, communications, food and survival, on an untried mission, to an unknown celestial body, and then return it safely to earth, re-entering the atmosphere at speeds of over 25,000 miles per hour, causing heat about half that of the temperature of the sun--almost as hot as it is here today--and do all this, and do it right, and do it first before this decade is out--then we must be bold.”
On the right we see an Apollo Astronaut facing the Flag on the lunar surface and back towards JFK as if to say “mission accomplished Mr. President.” The Earth shines above. I’ll let the viewer decide if the astronaut is Armstrong or Aldrin.
National Astronaut Day (like Cosmonautics Day in Russia) celebrates the launch of our first person in space. Alan Shepard was launched on May 5, 1961. The first landing occurred on July 20, 1969. These dates frame the patch. The National Astronaut Day motto: “We Believe in Astronauts” completes the design.
