    Description

ORIGINAL & VINTAGE Magic Lantern Slide
    Circa 1907: “Hawaii:
    Surf Riders Waikiki
” Unknown photographer, hand tinted. This slide was part of Harvard University's "Tozier Collection."
According to Jim Heimann in “
    Surfing,
” the surfer on the left is George Freeth (1883-1919). Jack London wrote about Freeth's surf riding prowess in a 1907
    Women’s Home Companion
    article, “
A Royal Sport”: “He is Mercury—a black Mercury. His heels are winged, and in them is the swiftness of the sea.

Hawaiian George Freeth is credited with establishing surf riding in California as well as a life saving pioneer. Patrick Moser has just written a bio on Freethʻs life and times: "
Surf & Rescue: George Freeth and the Birth of California Surf Culture.
    "
CONDITION: Very Good+: No noticeable damage, paper complete, image very nice with typical dust from age. Magic Lantern Slide: 4 inches wide X 3.25 inches tall.
The second and third scans are done to show the slide properly lighted.
The Magic Lantern Slides of Hawaii are glass time capsules that document the era circa 1880 through 1930.
Magic Lantern Slides are original photographs printed on a piece of glass, that can be hand painted. This was protected by a
paper mask and a clear glass top. On the edges of the slide, paper was glued on with gum arabic
that sealed off the image from dust.
Will ship free to the USA only inside a photo sleeve with archival backing. International eBay Global.
